someone please explain why in the US diesel engines are notoriously $7,500+ more than a gas engine? No real reason for it other than money making scheme.

BMW starting to build petrol engines and very similar diesel engines of up to 200 hp, the petrol version has 56 m/g fuel economy and diesel even better, with higher torque. any diesel offering on the market gives the consumers more choises.

It will be interesting to see how this effects the SUV market. If Jeep is successful in this offering, you can bet GM, Dodge and Ford will follow suit in their lines of SUVs and 1/2 ton pickups.

obviously, many questions, however the first one is: are you willing to pay $.80 per gallon more than gas to drive this thing? it's your money,

We need more diesels in this country! Good for Jeep. Seems to be a good fit.

/2012/09/14/bmw-unveils-new-3-cylinder-1-5-liter-diesel-and-petrol-engines/ 3.76 liters per 100 km consumption. 6 cylinder 250 Hp engine fuel consuption is 4,5 litera per 100 km ! see a car manufacture produce and make available to general public an engine that is fitting of the 21st generation i.e. 1500cc & 221hp/240nm. The only disappointing thing regarding this is BMW already have a production engine that can produce 190hp/112nm from ~999cc. So like always car manufactures will always hold back and essentially dip feed this tech to us. PS: Formula 1 and 1600cc Turbo will show the way in 2014/15 i.e. Jaguar 1600cc 500hp a la C-X75 is the real world example. People fret at the thought of losing the noise of a NA V8; wait till you feel the thrust & agility of a 1400cc@350hp in a 700kg frame. People must realise this tech is available among car manufactures today however they choose to release it tomorrow. MONEY!!!

On this side of the border diesel is generally a little less expensive than regular unleaded. 300K on my VW TDI and counting. I would love to have some alternatives to the German car manufacturers for Diesel. VW (Toureg), Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc all want far too much for their diesels. I believe this Jeep will do well in Canada.

Diesels are clean, quiet, and reliable. They are not your fathers diesel.

Remember the Mitt Romney lie about Chrysler moving jeep production to China? Why anyone voted for a snake oil salesman like Mittens is beyond me.

A 3.0 diesel in the Jeep would make plenty of power.
For reference, check out the Mercedes Benz GL which comes in a diesel and 2 gas models:
GL 350 with 3.0 V6 (Diesel) makes 455 lb-ft of torque, 26 mpg highway GL 450 with 4.6 V8 (Gasoline) makes 416 lb-ft of torque, 19 mpg highway
The diesel will run nearly forever, makes more torque, and gets nearly 37% more miles per gallon.
Diesel fuel is currently only ~ 11% more per gallon than regular unleaded.

I don't get the desire to grab a hold of that greasy dirty diesel pump handle every time you need to fill up. All diesel pumps also have fuel spilled all over the ground. Who wants to step in that goop and then wipe it on your fancy floor mats. That smell is near impossible to get off your shoes let alone out of a carpeted floor mat. Go take a sniff around a big truck and you'll know what your new Jeep is going to smell like forever.

If the transmission is properly geared for a diesel engine and the diesel engine gets significantly better fuel mileage than gas engines, yes!

Drove a diesel jeep as a company vehicle seemed to have plenty of power, just didn't like the design (kept tripping getting in and out). The price of diesel would be a factor.

I think Chrysler will do it even if it is only a limited production at first. They will gauge their customers thoughts and feelings on the idea, then go from there.

I'm so thrilled that diesel users who want a Jeep will be able to get one that runs on diesel. Just thrilled to death. Myself, I wouldn't be caught dead in a diesel vehicle.
