Ultrasound Can Now Monitor the Health of Your Car Engine

ScienceDaily -- A system that uses ultrasound technology to look inside car engines could lead to more efficient engines -- and huge fuel savings for motorists.

Ultrasound scans have long been a fundamental tool in healthcare for looking inside the human body, but they have never before been put to use in testing the health of a modern combustion engine.
In the University of Sheffield's Department of Mechanical Engineering, Rob Dwyer-Joyce, Professor of Lubrication Engineering, has devised a method of using ultrasound to measure how efficiently an engine's pistons are moving up and down inside their cylinders.

Auto mechanics used to be able to gauge the health of an engine just by listening to it. This skill has been lost with advanced engine technology and it looks like ultrasound scans might become the new diagnostic tool for gauging engine health.

Wonder if the ultrasound will eventually cause cracks in the engine. Hasten metal fatigue. Hope they do some through testing for extended time before using it in general. Not like Ethanol that now after 10 + yrs. is found to be worse overall for the environment than the Gasoline it is replacing, & for many engines.

This will not be of much use to the ever day driver. What can be done to correct a problem will cost more than it is worth to fix.

Gotta check out those little babies inside - piston rings that is.

Neat to see a new use for existing technology. This is for engine makers not for repair or other uses. Too expensive and couldn't do anything about it if you knew what was going on inside.

NASCAR or NHRA builders could put it to good use too.

Piston rings tend to coke up over time. A product like Jectron helps keep them clean for a better seal.

Everyone seems to have an angle. If my engine gets pregnant I'll get it an ultrasound but until that happens, I'll pass.

ULTRASOUND IMAGERY WILL NOT ALLOW HEAVY METAL ACCURACY... THE ECHO'S WILL CHANGE FAR TOO MUCH... THIS WILL RESULT IN GUESSING WHAT'S WRONG INSIDE THE ENGINE BLOCK... PRETTY MUCH LIKE THEY DO NOW... THIS REALLY IS A WASTE OF TIME & GRANT MONEY... THE CYLINDERS SHAPE... SIZE & DEPTH... THROUGH A SIMPLE MATH EQUATION WILL DO IT BETTER... ITS USUALLY CALLED THE TIMING... THIS IS HIGH-TECH NONSENSE...
