Listening to Alaska

Petroleum News -- Michael Bromwich, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, was in listening mode when he appeared in Anchorage Aug. 26 at a BOEMRE forum to hear local views on Arctic Alaska offshore oil drilling safety and oil spill response. Bromwich is conducting a series of similar offshore drilling forums around the United States, to gather input on the issues that Interior says underlie the deepwater drilling moratorium that the agency has imposed for the U.S. outer continental shelf.

Bromwich said that he will report the findings from the forums to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar by Oct. 31, and possibly earlier than that.

And the stakes couldn’t be higher, as the U.S. Department of the Interior moves toward making some decisions about the future of offsho

better get to Alyeska before it's gone... because as long as BP is allowed to pump oil through those damaged and poorly maintained pipelines, it will deteriorate the beauty of the land.

Then again, I forget, most people are city slickers who can't do much with the scary wilderness...

msterno: last I checked you can't DRINK oil and survive for any length of time.

But then, I like to just simply point you to this quote: "where were you when I create the universe..." If you don't know that, look it up. And read the rest that comes w/ it. Might give you some insight.

Will Alaskans know what is in their self interest? In fact there are no guarantees that multinational oil companies will keep the oil they pump at great peril to the natural beauty of Alaska will remain in the US. Most of it is sold on the world market to the highest bidder.

This article reports the facts without leading the reader to any particular conclusion. It presents seemingly accurate summaries of conflicting beliefs.

I'm glad to see SOMEBODY is trying to contribute to public knowledge as a professional journalist.

Their self-description is "Based in Anchorage, Alaska, Petroleum News is a weekly oil and gas newspaper that covers all of Alaska and northern Canada." I bookmarked the URL. You may wish to do so as well.

As the political winds change in Washington, DC, they'll also change when the next set of politicians come into office after the upcoming November elections. Lets just flip a coin and call it even...we'll lose some fights and we'll wind some fights when it comes to how America proceeds in going "green".

Michael got an ear-full. When the public is 73 percent against this governmental "moratorium," he will need a couple of months to formulate a reason to justify this group's banning all drilling against the will of the people.

Tell them to just wait till November 4th to bring this up. They will have no problems then. The moratorium is already slated for repeal following the elections.

I don't understand how the comment by DEG and some others are relevant to the article. Regarding the article, the forums are nothing but a delay tactic to justify the continuance of the moritorium. To hell with those placed out of work by the moritorium, at least the greenies will be happy.

Hopefully Obama will be moving out of the White Hose in just over two years. He has caused considerable damage to this country's long term economic conditions. Obamacare was/is wrong and is just expanded welfare that is being placed on the backs of the working people.

This story fails to also point out that the Alaskan Arctic Natives also own much of the land where these oil leases are being sold. Many of the native tribes owe their livelihood to Arctic oil production.

fact finding nothing. they do what they want no matter what the facts. some want to drill so point out where the drilling works and those that don't point to leaks. all pipelines leak. lip service.

If there is a slow down or halt in off shore drill and there is still a demand for not reliaying on imported oil, then drill in Alaska could be an alternative. Even if some were to start drilling, there would have to be restricktions.

Hope you all saw Sarah Palin's tour of ANWAR, with its lush forests, sparkling waterfalls and teeming wildlife. More gumment trip again with the drilling. They have to make it look like they are gathering public input, but believe me Obamarx bows down to Eeeek!-O-Freeeks, and it will take Nov. 2 to do anything about it, if then.

To drill or not to drill is the question...
but here in Alaska the other question is:
Do we get to keep what we drill so that our gas prices will go DOWN???
