Energy industry has a greener shade at CERAWeek

Houston Chronicle -- From enthusiasm for cleaner-burning natural gas and energy efficiency, to big-spending plans for carbon capture projects and renewable power, talk at the CERA-Week conference suggests the energy business is thinking greener.

“If you read the popular press, one would think maybe there's a pause button on climate change,” Patricia DiOrio, a director for IHS Cambridge Energy Associates, said during a panel discussion on Friday, the closing day of the conference hosted by IHS CERA.

“But I didn't see that here. The energy industry is very committed to moving forward on reducing carbon.”

A number of events have sidetracked efforts to pass sweeping laws that would put a price on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the United States.

"A number of events have sidetracked efforts to pass sweeping laws that would put a price on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the United States."

Read this line again and again. Phrases like "sweeping laws" and "put a price on emissions" should scare the hell out of taxpayers. Whenever has a government mandate not ended up costing us more, either at the point of sale or in taxes? Are we really willing to give up more freedom of choice? Remember the warning(s) inherent in George Orwell's novel, "1984"?

This cited line from the news story gives me the same feeling I get when my state legislature is not is session -- relief. When the headlong rush to legislate and mandate is slowed we can all breathe a little easier, knowing that we'll keep what little money and freedoms we have for a while longer.

NOW THAT THEY HAVE SHOWN GLOBAL WARMING TO BE A HOAX, WE STILL HAVE PEOPLE PUSHING TO GET AS GREEN AS WE CAN GET. THEN THEY WILL SHOW US HOW IT IS WORSE THAN WHAT WE HAVE NOW.

The only thing that is colored green in the oli industry is all of the dollars they have stolen from our pockets.

And I thought that the energy industry only though about money.

Then again, money IS green isn't it?

Well at least they are thinking about this issue. We will see what they do.

Their adoption of a position of being committed to being "green" certainly appears to be in their best long term interest. There appears to be little doubt that these issues will only get more attention and commitments.

It also appears that there is some money available both as investment and potentially profit.

Global warming is a phenom that has occurred numerous times over the history of the planet. There is NOTHING that we (the human race) can do to stop it....we may be able to delay it by a few decades, but it will eventually happen. We should be concentrating our efforts on "dealing" with it rather than trying to delay the inevitable.

goblazers get your head out of your you know what. No one likes pollution but no one likes being fed this global warming BS either. Its fairly self centered to think that the human race can have such a drastic affect on the temp of the world when it has been fluctuating up and down for 10s of thousands of years. the climate has actually cooled over the last ten years get a grip

"A number of events have sidetracked efforts to pass sweeping laws that would put a price on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the United States."

Hurray!

"First there was the failure of the December climate change summit in Copenhagen to create a widely accepted binding framework for emissions reductions."

Thank goodness!

"Next was the “Climategate” scandal — leaked e-mails from a British climate scientist that climate change skeptics contend show selective use of data to reach predetermined conclusions."

"Selective?" try "made up."

The energy industry is very committed to moving forward on reducing carbon.

Let me correct this statement to more accurately.

The energy industry is very committed to moving forward on picking the public's pocket..

I believe that it should be across the board, In my area they are hot on car emissions but the surrounding areas are not and our local plant pumps out so much smog and nothing is done about it because of money talking One time I can remember silver metal flakes coming down in the middle of summer all over my car after washing it. I though that I was inside of a water globe but it was' snow

"A number of events have sidetracked efforts to pass sweeping laws that would put a price on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the United States." A number of events, read, the TRUTH. They must have been basing their data on the IPCC. The same thing happened to Dorothy when she found out about the Wizard.

I believe in reducing pollution, but I don't agree with the liberals who are pushing for change at the snap of a finger. The government has to be careful how much money its borrowing in order to pay for some of these 'green' initiatives...I don't want my kid to have to face huge increases in taxes.
