Tesoro closure means only one refinery remains in Hawaii

GasBuddy Blog -- It's not good news for motorists in Hawaii: Tesoro plans to shutter its lone refinery in the Aloha state, leaving Chevron's smaller 54,000 barrel per day plant as the sole refinery left in the island state. "I think the affects of the refinery are probably and should be very minimal because shipping gasoline around the world is so simple and efficient these days," added former Chevron station operator Frank Young, according to a Hawaii News Now story.

Young might want to explain how an already isolated state would only feel "minimal" impacts if Hawaii's lone refinery would suffer setbacks, like it did in 2011, thanks to a unit going down. GasBuddy data shows that average gasoline prices in Hawaii were $3.48 December 5, before the...

If Tesoro cannot make money refining, then it stands to reason that they can import gasoline at a cheaper price. If anything this should lower prices, not raise them.

Now, all bets are off. Chevron is going to have a field day screwing Hawai'i for every penny it can squeeze out of it.

That gasoline is then piped 60 miles directly to Anchorage where it is stored and then redistributed to all gas stations in Alaska. Since the highway system within Alaska is very limited, all those villages located along the coasts and along the many major rivers must get their gasoline shipped by barges during the 6 months that all the rivers are not frozen. That is a monumental task since the state is so large. The size of Alaska would stretch from Savannah, GA to Evansville, IN, up to Marquette, MI, over to Bismark, ND, down to Tulsa, OK, and then over to Bakersfield, CA. The State of Hawaii is only slightly larger than the Island of Attu at the end of the Aleutian Island chain.

This needs to hault, and get these prices at the pump, to under two dollars a gallon.
