I replaced my original engine with a "low mileage" japanese import about 70k miles ago, and I need to replace it again 'cause the compression is dropping out on the middle cylinder. I can't complain since I only paid $600 for the whole thing including shipping. Anybody else done this? How many miles did you get? Any recommendations on who to buy from?

Thank you for the suggestion, but I suspect that my engine is the same as many others like it - the cylinder itself is worn and the rings just won't seal anymore. Replacing the rings (which also requires honing the cylinder) would be a lot of work for a temporary solution. I will most likely completely rebuild my current engine, but I don't want to be without my car while I do it.

I did test the cylinder to determine where the problem was, and it was definitely the rings not sealing. If about a teaspoon of oil put into the cylinder during the compression test causes the compression to go up (which it did in my case), then it means the rings are not sealing, otherwise it would be the valves leaking or a breach somewhere.

Why not replace compression ring in that cylinder.Do you have a blown head gasket? That might be another area.Engine is small an engine gets.
