I am going to Attitash in New Hampshire soon. Guess I will be going up by way of Rt 93 from the general Boston area. Attitash is near Batlett, Intervale, and North Conway.
Can anyone recommend good places to stay or interesting stops to make along the way?

Here comes winter. Midwest and NE getting geared up for cold & snow, and higher gas prices to boot - timing is everything.

Have been travelling in the west half lots. The people are just great. Mexican food in the small mom and pop restaurants in the southwest is fantastic.

You're welcome, Joy2U! Yes, I have a friend who goes to Sturgis every year. The event is in August, I believe.
If you get the chance, the Black Hills (also known as the Badlands) of South Dakota are a MUST see. I've been there several times and look forward to going again sometime in the future. Mainly to see Chief Crazy Horse! And if you DO drive over into Wyoming to Devils Tower Natl. Monument you won't believe the difference! Driving into the lush landscape of Wyoming after leaving the Black Hills is like driving onto another planet!

youngoldfogie - Thank you very much for the excellent information. The area you describe is someplace I have not been yet, but I would dearly love to go. Maybe someday.
You mentioned Sturgis. I have read that one week each year there is the most wonderful biker event in Sturgis. It sounds incredible.
Thanks again for taking the time to share the info.

Yeah, bicycler, The Grand Canyon is amazing, isn' it? Did you, by chance, get to go down inside the canyon? I've read some fascinating things about it and that is a goal of mine. I'd like to take a mule trip down into the canyon. I wonder what it looks like from the inside out instead of outside looking in?

Joy2U-Mammoth cave is REALLY huge! We were there in the summer of 2002 and it was hot! I read an article about it in National Geographic. It is the longest cave in the world with about 350 miles of it mapped. The park above it is beautiful. Ferns growing everywhere! That is all I remember!
Mammoth Cave Is The Worlds Longest Cave
Also, on Mt Rushmore! As you're walking up the path to the monument itself all the flags of every state in the union are displayed on both sides of the sidewalk. Pretty impressive! I think the thing that struck me the most about Mt. Rushmore was the story behind how it was conceived and built. That was quite a task to build something of that size, especially back then! And his assistant went on to dream and start building Chief Crazy Horse which is about 17 miles down the road from Mt. Rushmore. He has since passed away and his children have taken over the task. Chief Crazy Horse is being built entirely without any type of government funds whatsoever! That's pretty amazing when you think about it!
If you DO get to Mt. Rushmore, make sure you see Chief Crazy Horse also! I've been there three times and it never fails to impress! And while you're in the area visit the Badlands. Lead has a lot of history. Beautiful country. Near Sturgis is where they filmed parts of 'Dances With Wolves'. Just across the Wyoming border is Devils Tower National Monument. Very interesting! Theodore Roosevelt National Park is not far off and worth the trip.

I don't know if I will ever make it to Mt. Rushmore, although I would love to. Would you please describe your most striking memories of it? The things, the impressions, or the facts that stood out in your mind. Thanks.

Has anyone been to Mammoth Cave? I was traveling through Kentucky a few years back and decided to stop there for an afternoon. Wow, I was sorry I didn't have a couple of days to stay. I would like to hear of the highlights of anyone else who has gone.

My husband and I use to be team truck drivers. It was probably my favorite time of my life. We got to travel the US and a lot of times we had time to go sight seeing or whatever. We have been in 45 of the 48 states, plus Mexico and Canada.

Your chin will drop to the floor; you'll be awe struck; you'll be dazed with amazement if you go to Kartchner Caverns near Benson, Az. about an hour south of Tucson on I-10. Advance reservations are highly recommended, but walk-ups are taken on a first come basis for any time slots not already reserved.
This is a living cavern. The stagmites and stalactites are still growing. The views are breathtaking. A MUST SEE.

If you get the chance, visit Branson, MO. More music shows than Nashville, TN! The 76 Strip is usually crowded ANYTIME, so it pays to have a local map and use the feeder roads to the strip. You'll get around much faster. Take time out to get down to Tablerock Lake & Lake Taneycomo! Trout fishing is GREAT in Taneycomo! And next spring (April, 2006) Branson will open Branson's Landing in Old Town Branson on Lake Taneycomo. Should be a beautiful rebirth of an older area. Come to Missouri, the Show Me State. We'll show you!

Hot in the South, went up to Arkansa and the heat there seemed hotter than here in TX. It at lease rained and that was the reason it was hotter I guess.

Finished a two-week trip from Boston to Yellowstone NP. Stayed w/ relatives in Niagara Falls ON and Chicago before joining up w/ other relatives and heading West. One night in Wall SD (yep, got my Wall Drug bumper sticker), two nights in Keystone SD (Badlands, Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Black Hills, lots of bison, awesome views), and three nights west of Yellowstone in a cabin resort in Island Park ID before heading back to Chicago for a few days more.
The east gate access to Yellowstone is a mess, with the road construction and the 8a-8p restriction, but that area should be nice once it's done. I was awed by the revival of the forested areas destroyed by the fire more than 15 yrs ago. Saw the geyser fields, Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, bald eagles, one baby bear, picnicked by the lake with a view of the Grand Tetons, drove through Jackson Hole. And got lots of fridge magnets. :-)
On the way back stopped at Devil's Tower and again at Wall Drug for dinner before pulling an ill-advised all-nighter to get back to Chicago. Visited Millennium Park. Stopped by the Hershey store and American Girl Place on Michigan Avenue.
I'm curious how Sturgis mananges to accommodate everyone for that one weekend in August. Gotta be a zoo out there, a fun one I'll bet.

Just back from a 3910 mile trip thru 13 states, and I would like to share a few observations. I traveled east from Tucson on I 10 on the first day to Sonora Tex. There was a stream of U Hauls, cars with trailers, and multi vehicles caravans heading east with California plates. There were very few travel trailers, motor homes, and campers on the road. The ones I did see mostly had local plates. There were not many cars on the road with out of plates. Nothing like other years. Gas prices varied widely, I paid $1.99 in Siekston Mo, to $2.39 in the Northren suuburbs of Chocago. I saw gas prices as high as $ 2.59 per gal.

The UP of Michigan, Ste Saint Marie is a great place the locks, The Valley Camp museum. If you have the time there are ligh houses and my favorite, The Ship Wreck Museum at Whitfish Point. Plenty to see and do. The locks at Ste St Marie were a blast we took lots of photos there. Also tyr the Lockeview cafe and Lil Abners. Casinos there too if you want to gamble.

You did not say how long you were going to take for the trip, but you will be busy.
Its going to be hot, and I hope you have experience driving a vehicle as large as an RV in the mountains with all the grades and cuRVy roads. Once you pick the RV up in Denver you wont have much time to learn if you don't. Even a smaller RV is much different driving than a car.
Ill give you a few web sites you may want to visit prior to starting out. .rv.net/forum/ x .nps.gov x .us-national-parks.net
If you are a AAA member get their maps, Tour Books and Camp Books, they will be a great help. If not and you know someone that is, they can help.
Ill be out in the Rocky Mountains in mid July so if I see you Ill wave.
have a good and safe trip

I plan on traveling 4 states this year. My wife and daughter have never been to the Grand Canyon, so that's the destination. So we'll be going through Colorado, Utah, AZ and New Mexico to see some of the southwest.
What they don't know is, I'll have an RV waiting in Denver :) It'll make the trip tolerable in my book. But not the pocket book when it comes to gas LOL.
Planned stops: Colorado NM, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP (Overnighting), Mesa Verde NP, 4 corners, Grand Canyon (2 night stay).
Then, with the time we have left, we're hoping for Sunset Crater, Petrified Forest, El Morro, El Malpais, Great Dunes and a few more side trips :)
I'll have a digital camera and I'll be taking boat loads of pics. Hoping to grab some sunrise and sunset picks at some spots.

In Ca. try places like Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, Devil's Postpile, Sequoia Nat'l Park, Morro Bay, Solvang, San Francisco. Take a lighthouse vacation. There are over 30 lighthouses on the Ca. coast alone. My wife & I have taken two vacations doing almost nothing but finding & touring lighthouses. Can;t wait to see the ones on the east coast and on the Great Lakes.
