Just a couple weeks after it was announced that Texas would raise speed limits on rural highways to 85mph, an an article by MLive reporter Zane McMillin looks at the distinct possibility that more states should look at raising speed limits. It highlights a situation last year where speed limits were raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan last year after a traffic study indicated that a majority of people were speeding through downtown Grand Rapids. After a 2006 Michigan law pegged speed limits to the percentage of motorists traveling at a given speed, Michigan's Department of Transportation raised the speed limit on highways in Grand Rapids, US-131 saw an increase downtown from 55mph to 70mph, while I-196 nearing Grand Rapids saw an increase from...

Hmmm, millions of people told it's ok to go faster? Putting the risks of accidents aside, it will definitely increase gas consumption in the country (more money for the governments and the oil industry). At these speeds a car's gas consumption increases in a major way.

above 70 or 75 is too dangerous for most drivers on most roads on Long Island.

A lot of limited access roads outside NYC: posted limit: 55. Cops usually will ticket at 65, real limit is about 70.

Driving safely within the designated speed limits is the smart choice for each of us gasbuddies. If the speed limits rise, I would say it would depend on the highway being travelled. 85 mph seems reasonable to this Canadian driver.

Speed doesn't kill, drivers do! The speed LIMIT is there for a reason. Technically no one should go faster than the LIMIT. People are already driving 80, 85 on the highways here in California. Whether its the law or not. Whats important to remember is to drive safely according to your skills and age.

Texas raised the speed limit to get a $100 million payout from a private toll road operator. Then they lowered the speed limit on a parallel road. This doesn't seem right to me.

85 sure seems fast for any highway. How many drivers can actually and consistantly manage a car in freeway traffic going that fast?

Raise speed limits?
Sure...why kill 50,000 on the highways when we can easily up that to 70,000 or 75,000!!! Go Texas!!!!!!!

Anything above 55 causes you to burn gas faster.

anything over 70 is insane.most idiots think that the speed limit is the minimum speed and try to run over you if you are 5mph under the limit.almost everyone drives at least 5mph over, very few of those people can drive safely at that speed, let alone faster.we'd have fewer accidents and less lost time rubber necking at the dead drunks along the road,if we went back to 55.

Just because Obama is in office, states shouldn't be stupid by bowing down to public pressure. Cars are being designed as throw aways...........20-40 mph crashes are totalling cars. Roads are designed for maximum speeds. Limits should be based on the safest maximum to minimize accidents. Faster speeds also waste gasoline. Many times I am passed by speeders only to catch them at the next intersection or traffic slowdown. Common sense isn't very common any more.

leave it up to states to set and enforce the friggin speed limit, why is it a National issue anyway, except to further increase the power of your federal overlord.

CITIZENS, I WILL DECIDE HOW FAST YOU MAY DRIVE YOUR CAR. thus saith the federal govt

I personally will enjoy being able to drive 85 mph but I've so many people that can't handle 65 mph that it sounds a little scary. There are some 4 and 6 lane hwys in Texas that I would feel safe w/drivers going 85 mph.

Speed limits are a function of state gov. They can have guidelines from the feds but it is up to the state in the end.
During WW II Roosevelt set the national speed at 35MPH. An edict. Texas ignored it. Roosevelt made an impashioned plea to the Governor and the governor told Roosevelt that "if we drive 35MPH in Texas, we won't ever get there."

I think all speed limits should be raised outside of residential and downtow areas.

I can think of a local highway that now has a higher speed limit due to speeding. People now go faster than before they raised the limit.
